It depends, in maths, we are simply taking area as scalar, but in physics, in magnetics or electricity, we say "area vector", which means it's a vector quantity.. Atleast I think it's like this.. Anyone who knows I'm wrong can plz correct me..

Area is not a vector. But it can represented by one. If your dealing with planar region with three dimensions, then it can converted the area into vector. Whose length is actually scalar area and whose direction is perpendicular to plane.
