Average Speed Calculation of Two Trains

Given Information:

  • Distance between Ambala and Delhi = 200km

  • Distance covered by first train (via Karnal) = 210km

  • Time taken by first train = 4 hours

  • Distance covered by second train (via Saranpur) = 250km

  • Time taken by second train = 5 hours

Calculations:

  • Speed of first train = Distance/Time = 210/4 = 52.5 km/hr

  • Speed of second train = Distance/Time = 250/5 = 50 km/hr

  • Average speed of both trains = Total distance/Total time taken

Calculation of total time taken:

  • Time taken by first train to cover remaining distance (Delhi to Karnal) = Total time - Time taken by first train = 5 - 4 = 1 hour

  • Time taken by second train to cover remaining distance (Delhi to Saranpur) = Total time - Time taken by second train = 4 - 5 = -1 hour (Negative time means the train has not reached its destination yet)

Calculation of total distance:

  • Distance covered by first train to reach Karnal = 210km

  • Distance covered by second train to reach Saranpur = 250km

  • Distance covered by first train from Karnal to Delhi = Distance between Ambala and Delhi - Distance covered by first train to reach Karnal = 200 - 210 = -10km (Negative distance means the train has crossed its destination)

  • Distance covered by second train from Saranpur to Delhi = Distance between Ambala and Delhi - Distance covered by second train to reach Saranpur = 200 - 250 = -50km (Negative distance means the train has crossed its destination)

Calculation of average speed:

  • For the first train: Average speed = Total distance/Total time taken = (210-10)/5 = 40km/hr

  • For the second train: Average speed = Total distance/Total time taken = (250-50)/4 = 50km/hr

Conclusion:

  • The average speed of the first train (via Karnal) is 40 km/hr

  • The average speed of the second train (via Saranpur) is 50 km/hr

The shortest distance between Ambala and Delhi is 200km .A train cover...
We Know -

average speed = total distance travelled / total time taken

•train1

Given -

total distance travelled = 210 km
total time taken = 4 hours
average speed = ?

since, s= d/t

thus,
average speed = 210 km / 4 h
= 52.5 km/h

•train2

Given -

total distance travelled = 250 km
total time taken = 5 hours
average speed = ?

since, s=d/t

thus,
average speed = 250 km / 5 h
= 50 km/h

Therefore,

average speed of train1 = 52.5 km/h
average speed of train2 = 50 km/h

•we can conclude that train1 is moving faster than train2
