The first king of Delhi Sultanate was Qutub-ud-din Aibak, who was a slave of Muhammad Ghori, the ruler of Ghurid Empire.

- Lodi Dynasty (1451-1526)


Qutub-ud-din Aibak was the first king of Delhi Sultanate. He was a slave of Muhammad Ghori and was appointed as the governor of Delhi in 1192. After the death of Muhammad Ghori in 1206, Qutub-ud-din Aibak established the Mamluk Dynasty and became the first Sultan of Delhi.


The Delhi Sultanate was a significant period in Indian history as it marked the beginning of Muslim rule in India. The different dynasties that ruled under the Delhi Sultanate contributed to the growth and development of Islamic culture in India.

The first king of Delhi Sultanate was Qutubuddin Aybak,slave of Muhammad of ghur.Later,Qutubuddin declared himself the sultan of Delhi and started as what we call Mamluk or slave dynasty.Arabic word mamluk means 'owned' and most remarkable is that the three rulers in mamluk dynasty- Qutubuddin, Iltutmish,and Balban were originally slaves.In those days, slave was valued like the the son of the king and so that slaves were made sultans. Qutubuddin Aibak managed to rule for only four years after he rose to power because he died while playing chaugan,a form of polo.Then came to the throne, Qutubuddin 's son-in-law,Sham-sud-din Iltutmish.
