A metal sheet is placed in a variable magnetic field which is increasing from zero to maximum. Induced current flows in the directions as shown in figure. The direction of magnetic field will be -
  • a)
    normal to the paper, inwards
  • b)
    normal to the paper, outwards.
  • c)
    from east to west
  • d)
    from north to south
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

The direction of these circular magnetic lines is dependent upon the direction of current. The density of the induced magnetic field is directly proportional to the magnitude of the current. Direction of the circular magnetic field lines can be given by Maxwell's right hand grip rule or Right handed cork screw rule.

We use Lenz's law to find directions of current or magnetic field in these type of questions. It basically states that, induced electromotive force induces a current whose magnetic field in such a way that it opposes the change in magnetic flux through the loop.

In the given figure,
Current is flowing in clockwise direction => direction of induced magnetic field is normal to the paper and going inward ==> original magnetic field supposed to be increasing in a direction normal to the paper and going outward
