Efficiency of a Heat Engine

Heat engines are devices that convert thermal energy into mechanical work. The efficiency of a heat engine is defined as the ratio of the work output to the heat input. The efficiency of a heat engine is always less than 100% due to the second law of thermodynamics.

Temperature and Efficiency

The efficiency of a heat engine increases as the temperature of the heat source is increased while keeping the temperature of the heat sink fixed. This is because the efficiency of a heat engine is directly proportional to the temperature difference between the heat source and the heat sink. The higher the temperature difference, the higher the efficiency.

Heat cannot be fully converted into Work

It is impossible to fully convert heat into work because of the second law of thermodynamics. The second law states that heat always flows from hot to cold objects and that it is impossible to create a heat engine that is 100% efficient.

Cyclic Process to Transfer Heat

A cyclic process can be devised whose sole effect is to transfer heat from one object to another. This is known as a heat pump. A heat pump uses a small amount of work to transfer heat from a low-temperature source to a high-temperature sink. The efficiency of a heat pump is defined as the ratio of the heat transferred to the work input.

In conclusion, option C is the correct answer as the efficiency of a heat engine increases as the temperature of the heat source is increased while keeping the temperature of the heat sink fixed.
