On a 20 km tunnel connecting two cities A and B, there are three gutters. The distance between gutters 1 and 2 is half the distance between gutters 2 and 3. The distance from city A to its nearest gutter, gutter 1 is equal to the distance of city B from gutter 3. On a particular day the hospital in city A receives information that an accident has happened at the third gutter. The victim can be saved only if an operation is started within 40 minutes. An ambulance started from city A at 30 km/hr and crossed the first gutter after 5 minutes. If the driver had doubled the speed after that, what is the maximum amount of time the doctor would get to attend the patient at the hospital. Assume 1 minute is elapsed for taking the patient into and out of the ambulance.
  • a)
    4 min
  • b)
    2.5 min
  • c)

On a 20 km tunnel connecting two cities A and B, there are three gutte...
Distance AG1 = BG3 = 30 x 5/60 = 2.5 km.
∴ Distance G1G3 = (20 - 2.5 - 2.5) = 15 km.
Given, G1G2 : G2G3 = 1 : 2
∴ G1G2 = 5 km. and G2G3 = 10 km.
Now time taken from reaching A to G3 and back to A
Form A to G1 = 5 min (given)
From G1 to G3 = 15/60 x 60 = 15 min
From G3 to A 17.5/60 x 60 = 17.5 min
and time elasped for taking the patient into and out of the ambulance = 1 min.
Total time taken = (5 + 15 + 17.5 + 1) = 38.5
Remaining time = (40 - 38.5) = 1.5 min

On a 20 km tunnel connecting two cities A and B, there are three gutte...
Given information:
- A 20 km tunnel connects two cities A and B.
- There are three gutters in the tunnel.
- Distance between gutter 1 and 2 is half the distance between gutter 2 and 3.
- Distance from city A to gutter 1 is equal to distance from city B to gutter 3.
- An accident has happened at gutter 3 and the victim can be saved only if an operation is started within 40 minutes.
- An ambulance started from city A at 30 km/hr and crossed gutter 1 after 5 minutes.
- The driver doubled the speed after crossing gutter 1.

To find:
- Maximum amount of time the doctor would get to attend the patient at the hospital.

Solution:
1. Calculate the distance between gutters:
- Let the distance between gutter 1 and 2 be x km.
- Then, the distance between gutter 2 and 3 is 2x km.
- Total distance between gutter 1 and 3 is 3x km, which is equal to 20 km.
- Therefore, x = 20/3 km and 2x = 40/3 km.

2. Calculate the distance covered by the ambulance:
- After crossing gutter 1, the ambulance travels a distance of 20 - (20/3) = 40/3 km to reach gutter 3.
- Total distance covered by the ambulance is (20/3) + (40/3) = 20 km.

3. Calculate the time taken by the ambulance:
- The ambulance travels the first (20/3) km at 30 km/hr, which takes (20/3)/(30/60) = 4 minutes.
- After doubling the speed, the ambulance travels the remaining (20/3) km at 60 km/hr, which takes (20/3)/(60/60) = 20/9 minutes.
- Total time taken by the ambulance is 4 + 20/9 + 2 = 26/9 minutes.

4. Calculate the time available for the doctor:
- The time available for the doctor is 40 - 1 - (26/9) = 29/9 minutes.

5. Convert the time into minutes and seconds:
- 29/9 minutes = 3 minutes and 14 seconds.

Therefore, the maximum amount of time the doctor would get to attend the patient at the hospital is 1.5 minutes (option C).
