After electrolysis of a NaCl solution with inert electrodes for a cert...
Solution:

Given, volume of solution left= 60 mL
Concentration of NaOH=1N
Amount of Cu deposited=31.75 g

Step 1: Calculate the number of moles of NaOH present in the solution left.
n (NaOH) = C (NaOH) x V (solution left)
n (NaOH) = 1 x (60/1000) (1N = 1 mole/L)
n (NaOH) = 0.06 moles

Step 2: Calculate the number of moles of NaCl electrolysed.
NaCl → Na+ + Cl-
The number of moles of NaCl electrolysed= the number of moles of Na+ ions produced.
n (Na+) = 0.06 moles

Step 3: Calculate the amount of NaCl electrolysed.
n (Na+) = n (Cl-)
The number of moles of Cl- ions produced=0.06 moles
The number of moles of NaCl electrolysed=0.06 moles

Molar mass of NaCl= 58.5 g/mol
Mass of NaCl electrolysed= n (NaCl) x Molar mass of NaCl
Mass of NaCl electrolysed= 0.06 x 58.5
Mass of NaCl electrolysed= 3.51 g

Step 4: Calculate the theoretical yield of NaOH.
NaCl + H2O → NaOH + HCl
1 mole of NaCl produces 1 mole of NaOH.
Theoretical yield= 0.06 moles

Step 5: Calculate the percentage yield of NaOH.
Percentage yield = (actual yield/theoretical yield) x 100
Actual yield= mass of NaOH in 60 mL of 1N NaOH solution
Molar mass of NaOH= 40 g/mol
Amount of NaOH= C x V (in L) x Molar mass of NaOH
Amount of NaOH= 1 x (60/1000) x 40
Amount of NaOH= 2.4 g
Percentage yield= (2.4/0.06) x 100
Percentage yield= 400%
Percentage of theoretical yield= 100/400 x 100= 6%

Therefore, the percentage of the theoretical yield of the sodium hydroxide obtained is 6%.
