Aliphatic vs Alicyclic Compounds


Definition


  • Aliphatic compounds are those organic compounds that do not have a cyclic structure, i.e., they have an open chain or straight chain structure. They can be saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons.

  • Alicyclic compounds, on the other hand, are those organic compounds that have a cyclic structure but do not have an aromatic ring. They are also known as non-aromatic cyclic compounds.



Structure


  • Aliphatic compounds have a linear, branched, or ramified chain structure.

  • Alicyclic compounds have a cyclic structure, which may be saturated or unsaturated. The ring may be small or large, and the carbons in the ring may be sp3 or sp2 hybridized.



Examples


  • Examples of aliphatic compounds include methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, and nonane.

  • Examples of alicyclic compounds include cyclopropane, cyclobutane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, and cycloheptane.

  • Alicyclic compounds are used in the production of fragrances, flavors, and pharmaceuticals.
