Retardation and Time taken for a Car to Stop

Given:

  • Initial speed of car, u = 72 km/h

  • Final speed of car, v = 0 km/h

  • Distance travelled before coming to a stop, s = 100 m

Calculating Retardation

Retardation is the rate at which the car's speed decreases. It can be calculated using the following formula:

Retardation (a) = (v2 - u2) / 2s

Substituting the given values, we get:

a = (0 - (72*1000/3600)2) / (2*100)

a = -10 m/s2

Hence, the retardation of the car is 10 m/s2.

Calculating Time taken for the Car to Stop

The time taken for the car to stop can be calculated using the following formula:

Time (t) = (v - u) / a

Substituting the given values, we get:

t = (0 - (72*1000/3600)) / (-10)

t = 8 seconds

Therefore, the car takes 8 seconds to come to a complete stop.
