When 2 friends shake hands, it is counted as 1 handshake.

When the first friend shakes hands with the other 11 friends, he/she would have made 11 handshakes.

When the second friend shakes hands with the remaining 10 friends (excluding the first friend), he/she would have made 10 handshakes.

This continues until the last friend shakes hands with the remaining 1 friend.

Therefore, the total number of handshakes = 11 + 10 + 9 + ... + 1
= (11 x 12)/2
= 66
