Henry's law is not applicable for which of the following pair of gases...
HCl gas does not follow Henry's law because in solution HCl (g) dissociate into ions H+ and Cl-. HCl is a strong acid and it interact with solvent and readily dissociate into its constituent ions. While Helium, oxygen gas and hydrogen gas do not dissociate on interaction with water so they follow Henry's law

Henry's Law and its Applicability
Henry's law states that the amount of a gas that dissolves in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the liquid. It is applicable to ideal gases that do not undergo any chemical reaction with the solvent.

Pair of Gases and their Solvent

  • O2 and Xe: Henry's law is not applicable for O2 and Xe gases when water is used as a solvent. Both of these gases are non-polar and have weak intermolecular forces, which make them insoluble in water.

  • NH3 and HCl: Both NH3 and HCl are polar gases and can undergo hydrogen bonding with water molecules. Therefore, Henry's law is applicable for these gases when water is used as a solvent.

  • CO2 and N2: CO2 is a polar gas and can dissolve in water through hydrogen bonding. N2 is a non-polar gas and has weak intermolecular forces, which make it insoluble in water. Therefore, Henry's law is applicable for CO2 but not for N2 when water is used as a solvent.

  • Xe and H2S: Xe is a non-polar gas and has weak intermolecular forces, which make it insoluble in water. H2S is a polar gas and can dissolve in water through hydrogen bonding. Therefore, Henry's law is not applicable for Xe but applicable for H2S when water is used as a solvent.

Conclusion
From the above analysis, it can be concluded that Henry's law is not applicable for non-polar gases like Xe and H2S when water is used as a solvent. On the other hand, polar gases like NH3 and CO2 can dissolve in water through hydrogen bonding and follow Henry's law.
