Type of Cell Division and its Occurrence in Cells:

The type of cell division shown in the figure is mitosis, which is a type of somatic cell division.

What is Mitosis?

Mitosis is a process of cell division that results in the formation of two identical daughter cells from a single parent cell. It is an essential process in the growth and development of multicellular organisms, as well as in the repair and replacement of damaged or worn-out tissues.

Stages of Mitosis:

Mitosis consists of four stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During each stage, specific events occur, resulting in the separation of the genetic material and the formation of two new cells.

1. Prophase: In this stage, the chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, and the nuclear membrane breaks down. The spindle fibers also begin to form, attaching to the centromeres of the chromosomes.

2. Metaphase: During this stage, the chromosomes align at the equator of the cell, called the metaphase plate. The spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of the chromosomes and prepare to separate them.

3. Anaphase: In this stage, the spindle fibers contract, pulling the sister chromatids apart and towards opposite ends of the cell. This results in the formation of two sets of chromosomes, each with its own centromere.

4. Telophase: During this final stage, the nuclear membrane reforms around each set of chromosomes, and the spindle fibers disassemble. The chromosomes begin to uncoil and become less visible. The cell then undergoes cytokinesis, where the cytoplasm divides, resulting in the formation of two new daughter cells.

Occurrence of Mitosis:

Mitosis occurs in somatic cells, which are all the cells in the body except for the reproductive cells. Somatic cells undergo mitosis to produce two identical daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell. This process is essential for the growth, development, and repair of the body's tissues.

In conclusion, mitosis is a type of cell division that occurs in somatic cells, and it is essential for the growth, development, and repair of the body. The process consists of four stages, each with specific events that result in the formation of two identical daughter cells from a single parent cell.
