Early Life and Education
Bismillah Khan's family moved to Varanasi when he was six years old. He started learning the shehnai from his father and uncle, Ali Baksh. He also learned vocal music from Vilayat Hussain Khan and played the sitar and tabla. He performed at his first public concert at the age of 14.
Career and Achievements
Bismillah Khan became a regular performer on All India Radio in the 1930s. He performed at the Red Fort on India's Independence Day in 1947 and at the first Republic Day ceremony in 1950. He also performed at international events, including the Edinburgh International Festival in 1966 and the Cannes Film Festival in 1971.
Bismillah Khan was awarded the Padma Shri in 1961, the Padma Bhushan in 1968, and the Padma Vibhushan in 1980. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 2001. He was the third musician to receive this award, after M.S. Subbulakshmi and Ravi Shankar.
Death
Bismillah Khan died on August 21, 2006, in Varanasi, at the age of 90. He was buried at the Fatemain burial ground near the banks of the Ganges.
