a short summary in Gulliver travels
Gulliver embarks on four separate voyages in Gulliver’s Travels. There is a storm before every journey. All the four voyages add new perspectives to Gulliver’s life and also give him new opportunities for satirizing the ways of England.
In the first voyage, Gulliver travels to Lilliput, where he is huge and the Lilliputians are small. Initially, the Lilliputians look amiable, but the reader soon understands that they are very ridiculous and petty creatures. For “making water”, Gulliver gets convicted of treason in the capital (although he was putting out a fire and saving innumerable lives)–among other “crimes.”
In the second voyage, Gulliver travels to Brobdingnag, which is a land of Giants and he is as small as the Lilliputians were to him. So, naturally, Gulliver is scared, but his keepers are surprisingly gentle. He gets humiliated by the King when he is forced to see the difference between how England is and how it ought to be. Gulliver soon understands that he must have been very revolting to the Lilliputians.
In the third voyage, Gulliver travels to Laputa (and neighbouring Luggnagg and Glubdugdribb). When he visits the island of Glubdugdribb, he gets the power to call up the dead and discovers the deceptions of history. In the land of Laputa, the people are over-thinkers and are outrageous in many ways. He also meets the Stuldbrugs there, which is basically a race that is blessed with immortality. But Gulliver finds out that they are miserable.
In the fourth voyage, Gulliver travels to the land of Houyhnhnms, who are horses gifted with a reason. Their coherent, clean, and trouble-free society is contrasted with the foulness and brutality of the Yahoos, who are beasts in human shape. Gulliver manages to unwillingly come to recognize their human vices. He ends up staying with the Houyhnhnms for many years and gets totally captivated with them to a point that he never wants to leave. When he gets to know that the time has come for him to leave the island, he faints from unhappiness. When he returns to England, Gulliver feels appalled about other humans, including his own family.

Gulliver's Travels: A Summary

Gulliver's Travels is a satirical novel written by Jonathan Swift and was first published in 1726. It is divided into four parts, each describing the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon who finds himself in extraordinary and fantastical situations during his voyages.

The Voyage to Lilliput

In the first part, Gulliver is shipwrecked and finds himself on the island of Lilliput. Here, he encounters a race of tiny people who are only about six inches tall. Gulliver becomes a curiosity and a spectacle to the Lilliputians due to his enormous size. He is initially captured and imprisoned, but he manages to gain favor with the Emperor of Lilliput and is eventually granted his freedom. Gulliver assists the Lilliputians in their wars and political conflicts before eventually leaving the island.

The Voyage to Brobdingnag

In the second part, Gulliver finds himself in the land of Brobdingnag, inhabited by giants. Here, he is the miniature one and is subjected to the scrutiny and mockery of the Brobdingnagians. Gulliver becomes a plaything for the queen and is constantly in danger due to his small size. Despite the initial hardships, Gulliver gains the favor of the king and engages in intellectual discussions with him. Gulliver eventually leaves Brobdingnag with a newfound perspective on humanity.

The Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib, and Japan

In the third part, Gulliver encounters various strange and absurd societies. He visits Laputa, a floating island inhabited by intellectuals who are detached from the practical world. In Balnibarbi, he witnesses the futility of scientific experiments. In Luggnagg, he meets the Struldbrugs, immortals who are cursed with aging and decay. Gulliver also visits Glubbdubdrib, where he has the power to summon historical figures and converse with them. Finally, he arrives in Japan, where he experiences a more civilized society.

The Voyage to the Land of the Houyhnhnms

In the fourth and final part, Gulliver arrives in the land of the Houyhnhnms, a race of intelligent and rational horses. He becomes repulsed by humanity and finds solace in the company of these noble creatures. Gulliver's encounters with the Houyhnhnms lead him to question the nature of society, civilization, and human behavior. Eventually, he is forced to leave the land of the Houyhnhnms and return to England.

Conclusion

Gulliver's Travels is a complex and satirical work that uses fantastical adventures to criticize and satirize various aspects of human society. It explores themes of political corruption, societal flaws, and the inherent nature of humanity. Through Gulliver's experiences and observations, the novel provokes thought and reflection on the nature of civilization and human behavior.
