Sublimation:

  • Iodine

  • Dry ice

Solid:

Solids do not diffuse in one another because they have a fixed shape and volume due to their closely packed molecules. The molecules in a solid have strong attractive forces between them, which prevent them from moving around and mixing with molecules from another solid.

Liquid:

Liquids flow because their molecules are loosely packed and can move around each other. The attractive forces between molecules are weaker than in solids, allowing them to move more easily. The intermolecular forces in liquids are strong enough to keep the molecules in close proximity to one another, but not so strong that they cannot move around.

Freezing point:

The freezing point of water is 0°C or 32°F.

Gas:

Gases are compressible because the molecules in a gas are far apart from each other and have weak attractive forces. When pressure is applied to a gas, the molecules can be pushed closer together, reducing the volume of the gas. Gases show diffusion because their molecules are in constant motion and can move randomly in any direction. This allows gases to mix with other gases and spread out to fill any available space.
