Answer the following question based on the information given below.
A product manufactured by XYZ Ltd needs to undergo a Quality Control (QC) test in five different machines in a specific order. The probability of a product failing the QC test in machines A, B, C, D & E is 3/7, 2/3, 2/11, 2/7 & 7/11 respectively. A product is liable to be "rejected" at any stage if it has failed the QC test in all the machines on which it has been tested. However, the company has recently started two rounds of rejections. The first round happens after three tests are completed. Products left over after this round are treated as fresh products for the last two machines. The second round happens after a product passes through both these machines.

Q. If the probability of a product being rejected in the first round is x, which of the following is not a possible value of x?
  • a)
    4/77
  • b)
    6/121
  • c)
    2/11
  • d)
    4/121
  • e)
    2/7
Correct answer is option 'E'. Can you explain this answer?

Solution: The probability of a product being rejected in the first round can be obtained by multiplying the individual probabilities of a product failing the QC test in each of the first three machines.
However, note that the first three machines need not be A, B and C. They can be any combination of three machines out of A, B, C, D and E.
4/77 = (2/3) x (3/7) x (2/11). Hence, if the first three machines are A, B & C, x can be 4/77. 6/121 = (2/11) x (3/7) x (7/11). Hence, if the first three machines are A, C and E, xcan be 6/121. 2/11 = (2/3) x (3/7) x (7/11). Hence, if the first three machines are A, B and E, x can be 2/11. 4/121 = (2/11) x (2/7) x (7/11). Hence, if the first three machines are C, D and E, x can be 4/121. 2/7 cannot be obtained by multiplying any combination of three probabilities.
So, x cannot be 2/7.
Hence, option 5.

To find the probability of a product being rejected in the first round, we need to calculate the probability of the product failing the QC test in the first three machines and passing in the last two machines.

Let's calculate the probability step by step:

1. Probability of failing the QC test in machine A: 3/7
2. Probability of failing the QC test in machine B: 2/3
3. Probability of failing the QC test in machine C: 2/11

Since the product passes through these three machines, we need to calculate the probability of the product passing the test in machine D and E. We can do this by subtracting the probability of failing from 1.

4. Probability of passing the QC test in machine D: 1 - 2/7 = 5/7
5. Probability of passing the QC test in machine E: 1 - 7/11 = 4/11

Now, let's calculate the probability of the product being rejected in the first round. This is the probability of failing the test in the first three machines and passing in the last two machines.

Probability of rejection in the first round = (3/7) * (2/3) * (2/11) * (5/7) * (4/11)

Simplifying this expression, we get:

Probability of rejection in the first round = 120/3,003 = 40/1,001

Now, let's check which of the given options is not a possible value for x:

a) 4/77
b) 6/121
c) 2/11
d) 4/121
e) 2/7

By comparing the possible values of x with the calculated probability, we find that option e) 2/7 is not a possible value for x. Therefore, the correct answer is option e) 2/7.
