By increasing the temperature, the specific resistance of a conductor and a semiconductor
  • a)
    Increases for both
  • b)
    Decreases for both
  • c)
    Increases, decreases
  • d)
    Decreases, increases
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
By increasing the temperature, the specific resistance of a conductor ...
  • Because specific resistance depends upon value of α the temperature coefficient of the resistance. the value α for conductors is positive and for semiconductors the value of α is negative.
  • Hence By increasing the temperature, the specific resistance of a conductor increases and that of a semiconductor decreases.

By increasing the temperature, the specific resistance of a conductor ...
On increasing temperature conductivity decreases in case of a conductor bcoz average relaxation time between two successive collisions between metal ion kernals and free valence electrons decreases ,so conductance decreases and hence specific resistance increases whereas , in case of a semiconductor on increasing the temperature electrons accuire energy , and more electrons jump into conduction band from their valence band so conductivity increases and hence specific resistance decreases..in case of a semiconductor.
