The Battle of Plassey was fought on June 23, 1757, between the forces of the British East India Company and Siraj ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal. The battle marked the beginning of British colonial rule in India. The events that led to the Battle of Plassey are as follows:

- Siraj ud-Daulah was suspicious of the British and their increasing power in India. He was also angry at the British for supporting his rival for the throne.
- In June 1756, Siraj ud-Daulah attacked and captured the British fort in Calcutta. The British soldiers and civilians were taken captive and placed in a small room that became known as the Black Hole of Calcutta. Many of them died due to suffocation and heat exhaustion.
- The incident caused outrage in Britain and led to calls for revenge against Siraj ud-Daulah.
