The following statements concern elements in the periodic table. Which...
Group 16 vs Group 15 Elements: Ionization Enthalpy Values

Explanation:

The ionization enthalpy is the energy required to remove an electron from an atom or a positive ion. The ionization enthalpy values of elements increase as we move from left to right across a period and decrease as we move down a group in the periodic table.

Group 16 Elements:
- Group 16 elements are Oxygen (O), Sulphur (S), Selenium (Se), Tellurium (Te) and Polonium (Po).
- They have six valence electrons in their outermost shell, which means that they can gain two electrons to form a stable octet.
- Oxygen, Sulphur and Selenium are non-metals, while Tellurium and Polonium are metalloids.
- The ionization enthalpy values of Group 16 elements are lower than those of Group 15 elements in the corresponding periods. This is because the valence electrons of Group 16 elements are farther away from the nucleus than those of Group 15 elements, making it easier to remove them.

Group 15 Elements:
- Group 15 elements are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Arsenic (As), Antimony (Sb) and Bismuth (Bi).
- They have five valence electrons in their outermost shell, which means that they can gain three electrons to form a stable octet.
- Nitrogen and Phosphorus are non-metals, while Arsenic, Antimony and Bismuth are metalloids or metals.
- The ionization enthalpy values of Group 15 elements are higher than those of Group 16 elements in the corresponding periods. This is because the valence electrons of Group 15 elements are closer to the nucleus than those of Group 16 elements, making it harder to remove them.

Conclusion:
Therefore, the statement "Elements of Group 16 have lower ionization enthalpy values compared to those of Group 15 in the corresponding periods" is true.
