Isomerism in Complex Ions

Isomerism is the phenomenon in which two or more compounds have the same molecular formula but different arrangements of atoms. In complex ions, isomerism can occur due to different arrangements of ligands around the central metal ion.

The Given Complex Ions

(a) [Ni(H2O)5NH3]2
(b) [Ni(H2O)4(NH3)2]2
(c) [Ni(H2O)3(NH3)3]2

Geometrical Isomerism

Geometrical isomerism occurs when two or more ligands are attached to the metal ion in such a way that they cannot be interchanged by rotation around the metal-ligand bond. In other words, the ligands are located in fixed positions relative to each other.

(a) [Ni(H2O)5NH3]2 - In this complex ion, there are six ligands attached to the Ni(II) ion, five water molecules, and one ammonia molecule. As the ammonia molecule is not attached to the metal ion in a way that it cannot be rotated, there is no possibility of geometrical isomerism.

(b) [Ni(H2O)4(NH3)2]2 - In this complex ion, there are six ligands attached to the Ni(II) ion, four water molecules, and two ammonia molecules. Here, the two ammonia molecules are attached in a way that they cannot be interchanged by rotation around the Ni-N bond. Hence, this complex ion exhibits geometrical isomerism.

(c) [Ni(H2O)3(NH3)3]2 - In this complex ion, there are six ligands attached to the Ni(II) ion, three water molecules, and three ammonia molecules. As all the ligands are attached in a way that they can be interchanged by rotation around the Ni-ligand bond, there is no possibility of geometrical isomerism.

Optical Isomerism

Optical isomerism occurs when two or more compounds have the same molecular formula and the same arrangement of atoms but differ in their spatial arrangement. In other words, they are mirror images of each other and cannot be superimposed.

None of the given complex ions exhibit optical isomerism as they do not have any chiral centers.

Conclusion

Only complex ions (b) and (c) show geometrical isomerism, while complex ion (a) does not exhibit any isomerism. Hence, the correct option is (D).
