DIRECTIONS for the question: Read the information given below and answer the question that follows.
Six classes, one each of the six subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Statistics and English - are held in a school one after the other (not necessarily in the same order) abiding the following conditions.
(i) Two classes are held between Chemistry and English.
(ii) Neither Biology nor Physics is the first or the last class.
(iii) The number of classes between Chemistry and Statistics is one more than that between Maths and Physics.
(iv) The Chemistry class is held immediately after the Biology  class  and immediately before the Maths class.
Q. If the Physics class is held immediately after the Maths class, then which of the following statements is true?
  • a)
    Statistics is the last class
  • b)
    Chemistry is the second class
  • c)
    Biology is the second class
  • d)
    Maths is the first class
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Let each subject be denoted by the first letter of its name.
►Physics → P, Chemistry → C,
►Biology → B, Maths → M
►Statistics → S, English → E
Now, the following represent the given conditions.

Hence, only case I and III will hold

To solve this question, we need to analyze the given conditions and deduce the order of the classes. Let's break down the given information and solve the question step by step.

Given conditions:
- Two classes are held between Chemistry and English.
- Neither Biology nor Physics is the first or the last class.
- The number of classes between Chemistry and Statistics is one more than that between Maths and Physics.
- The Chemistry class is held immediately after the Biology class and immediately before the Maths class.

Step 1: Analyzing condition (ii) - Neither Biology nor Physics is the first or the last class.
From this condition, we can deduce that Biology and Physics cannot be the 1st or 6th class. So, they must be in the middle positions.

Step 2: Analyzing condition (i) - Two classes are held between Chemistry and English.
As there are two classes between Chemistry and English, the order can be CE___E or E___EC, where C represents Chemistry and E represents English.

Step 3: Analyzing condition (iv) - The Chemistry class is held immediately after the Biology class and immediately before the Maths class.
From this condition, we can infer that the order must be BCEM___E or EBMC___E, as Chemistry is immediately after Biology and before Maths.

Step 4: Analyzing condition (iii) - The number of classes between Chemistry and Statistics is one more than that between Maths and Physics.
From this condition, we can deduce that there is only one class between Chemistry and Statistics, and one class between Maths and Physics. Therefore, the order can be BCEMSP, where S represents Statistics and P represents Physics.

Step 5: Analyzing the given condition - If the Physics class is held immediately after the Maths class.
From the previous deductions, we have the order BCEMSP. If Physics is held immediately after Maths, the final order will be BCEMSP.

Answer:
From the final order BCEMSP, we can see that Biology is the second class.

Therefore, the correct answer is option (c) - Biology is the second class.
