1. Balanced chemical equation:
The reaction between KMnO4 and sulphite ion (SO32-) in acidic solution can be represented as:
5(SO32-) + 2MnO4- + 6H+ → 5(SO42-) + 2Mn2+ + 3H2O
2. Moles of sulphite ion:
As per the balanced equation, 5 moles of sulphite ions react with 2 moles of KMnO4.
Therefore, 1 mole of sulphite ion will react with (2/5) moles of KMnO4.
3. Calculation:
Moles of KMnO4 needed = (2/5) moles
Therefore, the correct answer is B, which is -2/5.
