Jet Streams

Formation of Jet Streams

Jet streams are formed due to the temperature difference between the polar and equatorial regions. The polar regions are colder, and the equatorial regions are warmer. This temperature difference creates a pressure gradient, causing the air to move from the equator to the poles. The rotation of the earth causes the air to move in a curved path, resulting in the formation of the jet streams.

Types of Jet Streams

There are two main types of jet streams - polar jet streams and subtropical jet streams. Polar jet streams are stronger and found at a higher altitude than subtropical jet streams. They are located at around 9-12 km in the northern hemisphere and around 10-13 km in the southern hemisphere. Subtropical jet streams are weaker and found at a lower altitude than polar jet streams. They are located at around 8-11 km in the northern hemisphere and around 9-12 km in the southern hemisphere.
