The four bar mechanism shown in the figure (Given : OA = 3 cm, AB = 5 cm, BC = 6 cm, OC = 7 cm) is a
  • a)
    Double crank mechanism
  • b)
    Double rocker mechanism
  • c)
    Crank rocker mechanism
  • d)
    Single slider mechanism
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
The four bar mechanism shown in the figure(Given : OA = 3 cm, AB = 5 c...
Shortest link OA = 3 cm
Longest link OC = 7 cm
Sum of shortest and longest link = 10 cm
Sum of other two = 5 + 6 = 11 cm
If sum of shortest and longest link is lesser than sum of other two then rocker-rocker mechanism is obtained.

The four bar mechanism shown in the figure(Given : OA = 3 cm, AB = 5 c...
OC = 7 cm (longest link)
OA = 3 cm (shortest link)
AB = 5 cm and BC = 6 cm
OA + OC = 7 + 3 = 10 cm
AB + BC = 11 cm
Since OA + OC < AB + BC
i.e. the sum of shortest and longest link is less than the sum of other two links. Thus, the given links form a Grashoff chain.
According to Grashoff law:
(i) The double crank mechanism is obtained if the shortest link is fixed.
(ii) Crank – rocker mechanism is obtained if link adjacent to shortest link, is fixed.
(iii) Double rocker mechanism is obtained if link opposite to shortest link, is fixed.
Here the link adjacent to the shortest link is fixed. Thus, the mechanism is a crank-rocker mechanism.
