Root Blower for Supercharging of I.C. Engine

Introduction:
Supercharging is the process of increasing the pressure of air entering the engine cylinder. This is done to increase the mass of air which can be drawn into the engine during the suction stroke. Supercharging increases the power output of the engine.

Types of Superchargers:
There are various types of superchargers commonly used in the automotive industry for supercharging of I.C. engines such as:
- Centrifugal supercharger
- Positive displacement supercharger
- Twin-screw supercharger
- Roots blower

Supercharger for I.C. Engine:
The supercharger used for I.C. engine should be able to provide constant pressure and flow rate irrespective of the engine speed. It should also be able to withstand high temperatures and pressures.

Roots Blower:
Roots blower is a positive displacement type of supercharger that uses two rotors to compress the air. The rotors are made up of lobes that interlock with each other. The rotors are driven by a belt from the engine crankshaft. The air is drawn into the supercharger through the inlet port and trapped between the rotors. The air is then compressed and discharged through the outlet port.

Advantages of Roots Blower:
- They are simple in design and construction
- They are compact and can be integrated easily into the engine
- They provide a constant pressure and flow rate at all engine speeds
- They are capable of providing a high boost pressure

Disadvantages of Roots Blower:
- They are less efficient at high engine speeds
- They generate more heat due to the high compression ratio
- They require a separate intercooler to reduce the temperature of the compressed air

Conclusion:
Roots blower is the most commonly used supercharger for the supercharging of I.C. engine due to their simple design, compactness, and capability to provide a constant pressure and flow rate.
