A structural member carrying a pull of 700 kN is connected to a gusset...
Given:
Pull = 700 kN
Diameter of rivet = 20 mm
Shearing strength per pitch length = 60 kN
Crushing strength per pitch length = 35 kN
Tearing strength per pitch length = 70 kN

To find: Number of rivets required to connect the structural member to the gusset plate.

Assumptions:
1. The load is uniformly distributed among all the rivets.
2. The efficiency of the joint is 50%.

Solution:
Shearing strength of one rivet = Permissible load per pitch length / Number of rivets
= 60 kN / n (where n is the number of rivets)
Crushing strength of one rivet = Permissible load per pitch length / Number of rivets
= 35 kN / n
Tearing strength of one rivet = Permissible load per pitch length / Number of rivets
= 70 kN / n
Total load carried by one rivet = Shearing strength + Crushing strength + Tearing strength
= 60/n + 35/n + 70/n
= 165/n
Therefore, the number of rivets required to carry a load of 700 kN is given by:
Number of rivets = Total load / Load carried by one rivet
= 700 kN / (165/n)
= 4.24n
Assuming an integer value for n, the nearest number of rivets required is 20.

Therefore, the number of rivets required to connect the structural member to the gusset plate is 20.

A structural member carrying a pull of 700 kN is connected to a gusset...
The number of rivers required = force/Rivit value.

Rivit value = min value of shearing, bearing and tearing.

So,

700/35= 20.
