Naga Panchami

Naga Panchami is a festival celebrated in India to honor snakes. It is observed on the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Shravana (July/August). The festival is most celebrated in the southern states of India, particularly in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

History and Significance

The festival has its roots in Hindu mythology, where snakes are considered divine creatures. According to the legend, when the gods and demons were churning the ocean to get the nectar of immortality, a deadly poison emerged. Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the universe. As a result, his throat turned blue, and he came to be known as Neelkanth.

To show their gratitude, the snakes were worshipped as a sign of respect and protection. It is believed that the worship of snakes helps in protecting oneself from their venomous bites.

Celebrations

On the day of Naga Panchami, people clean their houses and worship the snake god. They offer milk, honey, and other traditional sweets to the snake deity. In some regions, people also draw pictures of snakes with turmeric and kumkum powder in front of their houses.

People also visit temples dedicated to the snake god and offer prayers. In some places, processions are carried out with snake idols, and special pujas are performed.
