A point source of light is kept at the centre of a solid transparent sphere. The sphere is surrounded by air . The refractive index of material of sphere for which the rays incident from point source on glass–air interface will suffer total internal reflection is:
  • a)
    1.5
  • b)
    √2
  • c)
    2
  • d)
Total internal reflection will not occur for any value of refractive index of the sphere
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

A point source of light is kept at the centre of a solid transparent s...
The refractive index of the material of the sphere affects how the light rays are bent as they pass through the sphere. If the refractive index of the material of the sphere is greater than 1 (which is the refractive index of air), then the light rays will be bent towards the normal as they enter the sphere and away from the normal as they leave the sphere. This means that the light rays will converge towards the center of the sphere.

On the other hand, if the refractive index of the material of the sphere is less than 1, then the light rays will be bent away from the normal as they enter the sphere and towards the normal as they leave the sphere. This means that the light rays will diverge away from the center of the sphere.

Therefore, in order for the light rays to converge towards the center of the sphere, the refractive index of the material of the sphere must be greater than 1.
