Explanation:

When DHCP snooping is configured on a LAN switch, it provides security over the network by preventing unauthorized access and rogue DHCP servers. It does this by creating a binding database between the client’s MAC address and its IP address. Clients with specific MAC or IP addresses can access the network, and others will be blocked.

How DHCP Snooping works:

DHCP snooping works by intercepting and analyzing the DHCP messages exchanged between clients and servers. It uses the following techniques to secure the network:

1. DHCP Snooping Binding Database:

When a client sends a DHCP request, the switch intercepts and records the MAC address, IP address, and port number information in the DHCP snooping binding database. This database maintains a list of permitted MAC and IP addresses that are allowed to access the network.

2. Dynamic ARP Inspection (DAI):

DHCP snooping also uses DAI to inspect the ARP packets exchanged between clients and servers. It validates the ARP requests and responses to ensure that they are legitimate and match the DHCP binding database. If they don’t match the binding database, they are dropped.

3. Rogue DHCP Server Detection:

DHCP snooping can detect rogue DHCP servers on the network that might try to distribute unauthorized IP addresses to clients. It does this by comparing the DHCP messages received from the server with the DHCP snooping binding database. If the server is unauthorized, it is blocked.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, DHCP snooping ensures network security by only allowing clients with specific MAC or IP addresses to access the network. It creates a binding database of authorized clients and drops all unauthorized requests. By using DAI and rogue DHCP server detection, it also prevents ARP spoofing attacks and rogue DHCP servers from attacking the network.
