Read the following and answer the question that follow.

Explanation:

  • Initially, let the number of students in E be E1, and the average be A1.

  • Let the number of students in R be R1, and the average be B1.

  • After transferring 5 students from E to R, let the number of students in E be E2 and the number of students in R be R2.

  • Therefore, E2 = E1 - 5 and R2 = R1 + 5.

  • Also, the total number of students in E and R remains the same, i.e. E1 + R1 = E2 + R2.

  • After transferring another set of 5 students from R to E, let the number of students in E be E3 and the number of students in R be R3.

  • Therefore, E3 = E2 + 5 = E1 - 5 + 5 = E1 and R3 = R2 - 5 = R1 + 5 - 5 = R1.

  • The total number of students in E and R remains the same, i.e. E3 + R3 = E1 + R1.

  • Now, the average of E after the transfer is still A1 because the same number of students are still in E and the sum of their marks hasn't changed.

  • But the average of R has decreased because 5 students with higher marks have left R and have been replaced by 5 students with lower marks from E.

  • Therefore, R’s average will always decrease after this operation.


Therefore, the correct answer is option 'B' - Decrease always.
