As thermal coefficient of expansion (α) is more for copper in comparison to steel. So during heating, the tendency of copper is to elongate more, which will be restricted by steel. So copper will experience compressive stress while steel will experience tensile stress.

A bar of copper and steel form a composite system which is heated thr...
The answer to this question is option 'B', which means that the stress induced in the copper bar is compressive.

Explanation:

When two different materials having different coefficients of thermal expansion are joined together to form a composite system and then subjected to a temperature change, each material undergoes a different amount of thermal expansion or contraction. This differential expansion or contraction creates internal stresses within the composite system.

In this case, the copper bar and steel bar are joined together to form a composite system. The coefficient of thermal expansion of copper is greater than that of steel (i.e., αcopper > αsteel). When this composite system is heated through a temperature of 40℃, the copper bar will expand more than the steel bar. This differential expansion will create compressive stresses within the copper bar, because it will be trying to expand but is constrained by the steel bar.

Therefore, the stress induced in the copper bar is compressive.
