The sequence <sn> =  is
  • a)
    not monotonic but bounded
  • b)
    not monotonic and not bounded
  • c)
    monotonic but not bounded
  • d)
    monotonic and bounded
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Here lower bound = l = − 1/2 , & upper bounded u = 1. But the given sequence is neither increasing nor decreasing. Thus, <sn> is bounded but not monotonic.

The sequence <sn> = isa)not monotonic but boundedb)not monotonic...
Option (a) as greatest lower bound is -1/2 and least upper bound is 1. so it is bounded. it is not monotonic as first term is 1 , 2nd term is -1/2 and 3rd term is 1/3 . Clearly you can see that first term is positive, 2nd term is less than 1st term and 3rd term is greater than 2nd term. so the sequence is neither decreasing or increasing.
