A cylindrical riser is attached to the side of a steel plate casting ...
Given data:
Volume shrinkage of steel during solidification = 3%
Volume of riser = 3 times that dictated by the shrinkage consideration alone
Dimensions of steel plate casting = 25cm x 12.5cm x 5cm

Calculation:
Volume of steel plate casting = 25cm x 12.5cm x 5cm = 1562.5 cm³
Volume of steel after shrinkage = 0.97 x 1562.5 cm³ = 1514.875 cm³
Volume of riser dictated by shrinkage consideration alone = 3% x 1514.875 cm³ = 45.44625 cm³
Volume of actual riser = 3 x 45.44625 cm³ = 136.33875 cm³
Let the radius of the riser be r and height be h
Volume of the riser = πr²h
From the given data,
πr²h = 136.33875 cm³
Also, the riser should have enough volume to compensate for the shrinkage of the steel casting. So, the riser should be able to supply the same volume of molten steel as the volume of the solidified steel that shrinks.
Volume of solidified steel that shrinks = 1562.5 cm³ - 1514.875 cm³ = 47.625 cm³
Volume of molten steel that compensates for shrinkage = 47.625 cm³
Let the height of the riser be equal to its radius, i.e. h = r
Then,
πr²h = πr³ = 136.33875 cm³
r³ = 136.33875 cm³/π = 43.375 cm³
r = (43.375 cm³)^(1/3) = 3.47 cm
h = r = 3.47 cm

Therefore, the dimensions of the riser in optimum conditions are:
Radius = 3.47 cm
Height = 3.47 cm (approximately equal to 3 cm)
