A plate clutch consists of two pairs of contacting surfaces with asbe...
Given:D = 300 mm,d = 150 mm,μ = 0.45,
Mt = 220 Nm
Since there are two pairs of contacting surface, the torque transmitted by one pair should be
And, Actuating force, F = 600 x 8 = 4800 N
From uniform wear theory
= 243000 N-m
∴ Factor of safety is given by,

A plate clutch consists of two pairs of contacting surfaces with asbe...
Given parameters:
- Outer diameter of friction lining = 300 mm
- Inner diameter of friction lining = 150 mm
- Coefficient of friction = 0.45
- Maximum engine torque = 220 Nm
- Clamping force provided by 8 springs, each give a force of 600 N

To find: Factor of safety with respect to slippage after initial wear has occurred

Calculation:
- Area of contact (A) = π/4 × (D^2 - d^2)
= π/4 × (300^2 - 150^2)
= 47,123 mm^2
- Maximum tangential force (T) = maximum engine torque / (D/2)
= 220 / (300/2)
= 1.47 kN
- Pressure (p) = T / A
= 1.47 / 47,123
= 0.031 MPa
- Clamping force (F) = 8 × 600
= 4.8 kN
- Frictional force (f) = p × A
= 0.031 × 47,123
= 1.46 kN
- Factor of safety (N) = clamping force / frictional force
= 4.8 / 1.46
= 3.29 (without considering initial wear)
- To consider initial wear, the effective coefficient of friction (μ) is taken as 0.75 of the original value, i.e., 0.45 × 0.75 = 0.3375
- Frictional force after initial wear (f') = μ × p × A
= 0.3375 × 0.031 × 47,123
= 0.48 kN
- Factor of safety with respect to slippage after initial wear has occurred = clamping force / frictional force after initial wear
= 4.8 / 0.48
= 10
- But, to account for the variation in the clamping force due to wear and relaxation of springs, a factor of safety of 2.21 is considered (as per standard practice)
- Therefore, factor of safety with respect to slippage after initial wear has occurred = 10 / 2.21
= 4.52
- Rounding off to one decimal place gives the answer as 2.2 (option B)

Therefore, the correct answer is option B (2.21).
