°C, it undergoes a phase transformation from austenite to ferrite and pearlite. This transformation is known as eutectoid transformation. During this process, the carbon atoms diffuse out of the austenite and combine with iron atoms to form tiny particles of cementite (Fe3C), which form within the ferrite matrix to create pearlite.

The resulting microstructure is a mixture of ferrite and pearlite, with the pearlite appearing as a series of alternating light and dark layers under a microscope. The ferrite is a relatively soft and ductile phase, while the pearlite is harder and more brittle. This microstructure gives the steel good strength and toughness, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including construction, automotive, and machinery.

However, if the steel is cooled rapidly from the molten state (quenched), the austenite phase is transformed into martensite, a hard and brittle phase with little ductility. This process is known as martensitic transformation and is often used to produce high-strength steel components.
