In 2013, the scope was broadened to include Snow Leopards.
The GTI's founding partners included the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Smithsonian Institution, Save the Tiger Fund, and International Tiger Coalition (representing more than 40 non-government organizations). The 13 tiger range countries lead the initiative (TRCs).

The Global Tiger Initiative (GTI) is a program of the World Bank.
The Global Tiger Initiative (GTI) was launched in 2008 as a collaborative effort between the World Bank and governments of tiger range countries, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector. The goal of the GTI is to promote the conservation of tigers and their habitats, with the aim of doubling the number of wild tigers by 2022.
The GTI recognizes the critical importance of tigers as flagship species for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Tigers are not only a symbol of global biodiversity, but they also play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Protecting tigers and their habitats can have a positive impact on the conservation of other species and the overall health of ecosystems.
The GTI focuses on three main areas of intervention:
1. Conservation and protection of tiger habitats: The GTI promotes the establishment and effective management of protected areas, as well as the implementation of landscape-level conservation strategies. This includes measures to combat illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and habitat destruction.
2. Community engagement and livelihood improvement: The GTI recognizes the importance of involving local communities in tiger conservation efforts. It supports initiatives that provide alternative livelihood options for communities living in and around tiger habitats, reducing their dependence on activities that may harm tigers and their habitats.
3. Strengthening institutional capacity: The GTI works with governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the capacity for tiger conservation at national and regional levels. This includes providing technical assistance, sharing best practices, and promoting collaboration between different stakeholders.
The GTI also emphasizes the importance of monitoring and evaluation to track progress and ensure the effectiveness of conservation efforts. It encourages the use of science-based approaches and promotes the sharing of data and information among stakeholders.
In conclusion, the Global Tiger Initiative (GTI) is a program of the World Bank that aims to promote the conservation of tigers and their habitats. It focuses on habitat protection, community engagement, livelihood improvement, and strengthening institutional capacity. The GTI recognizes the importance of tigers as flagship species for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
