At t = 0, one ball is moving towards the other ball and the other ball is moving perpendicular to the first ball. Let's assume that the distance between the two balls is L.

The motion of the two balls can be analyzed separately. The ball moving towards the other ball will cover a distance of L/2 in time t1 = L/2v. The ball moving perpendicular to the first ball will cover a distance of L/2 in time t2 = L/2v.

At time t = t1 = L/2v, the ball moving towards the other ball will reach the midpoint between the two balls. At this point, the thread will become taut.
