Solution:
Understanding the problem:
- We have 5 bulbs, out of which 3 are defective.
- We need to find out the minimum number of trials required to determine which bulbs are defective by using 2 bulb points in a dark room.
First Trial:
- Turn on any 2 bulbs.
- If both bulbs light up, then both bulbs are good and the defective bulbs are the remaining 3.
- If only one bulb lights up, then it is a good bulb and the other bulb is defective.
Second Trial:
- Turn off the bulb that lit up in the first trial.
- Replace it with one of the remaining bulbs.
- Turn on both bulbs.
- If both bulbs light up, then the replaced bulb is defective.
- If none of the bulbs light up, then the remaining bulb is defective.
Total number of trials:
- In the worst-case scenario, we may need 2 trials to identify the defective bulbs.
- So, the room shall be lighted at least 2 times to determine the defective bulbs.
