Molality of Aqueous Solution of H2SO4

Given:

Mole fraction of water (H2O) = 0.6

Mole fraction of H2SO4 can be calculated as:

Mole fraction of H2SO4 = 1 - Mole fraction of water = 1 - 0.6 = 0.4

Calculating Molality:

  • First, we need to find the moles of water and H2SO4 in the solution.

  • Let's assume we have 1 mole of the solution for ease of calculation.

  • Since the mole fraction of water is 0.6, the moles of water = 0.6 moles

  • Similarly, moles of H2SO4 = 0.4 moles

  • Next, we calculate the mass of water and H2SO4 using their respective molar masses.

  • Finally, we use the formula for molality:

Molality (m) = moles of solute / mass of solvent (kg)

Assuming:

Molar mass of water (H2O) = 18 g/mol

Molar mass of H2SO4 = 98 g/mol

Mass of 1 mole of the solution = 18g (from water) + 98g (from H2SO4) = 116g

Thus, the mass of 1 mole of the solution = 0.116 kg

Substitute the values:

  • For water: moles = 0.6, mass = 0.6 x 18g = 10.8g = 0.0108 kg

  • For H2SO4: moles = 0.4, mass = 0.4 x 98g = 39.2g = 0.0392 kg

Now, calculate molality:

Molality = (0.6 / 0.0108) + (0.4 / 0.0392) = 55.56 + 10.2 = 65.76 m
