Calculation of Mean Effective Pressure, Heat Supplied and Cycle Efficiency in Air Standard Diesel Cycle

Given Parameters

  • Compression Ratio (r) = 16

  • Initial Temperature (T1) = 15°C

  • Initial Pressure (P1) = 1 bar

  • Final Temperature at Constant Pressure Process (T3) = 1480°C

Calculation of Mean Effective Pressure (MEP)

MEP is given by the formula:

MEP = (P3 x V3 - P2 x V2) / (V3 - V2)

where,

  • P3 = Pressure at the end of constant volume process

  • V3 = Volume at the end of constant volume process

  • P2 = Pressure at the end of constant pressure process

  • V2 = Volume at the end of constant pressure process

Using the above formula, we get:

  • P3 = r x P2 = 16 x 1 bar = 16 bar

  • V3 / V2 = r^(1-γ) = 16^(0.4) = 2.2974

  • V3 = V2 x (V3 / V2) = V2 x 2.2974

  • MEP = (16 x V3 - 1 x V2) / (V3 - V2) = 10.33 bar

Calculation of Heat Supplied per Kg of Air

Heat supplied per Kg of air is given by the formula:

Qin = cp x (T3 - T2)

where,

  • cp = Specific heat at constant pressure

  • T2 = Temperature at the end of isentropic compression

Using the above formula, we get:

  • cp = γ x R / (γ - 1) = 1.4 x 0.287 kJ/kg.K / (1.4 - 1) = 0.718 kJ/kg.K

  • T2 = T1 x r^(γ-1) = 15°C x 16^(0.4) = 221.1°C

  • T3 = 1480°C

  • Qin = 0.718 x (1480 - 221.1) = 978.6 kJ/kg

Calculation of Cycle Efficiency

Cycle efficiency is given by the formula:

η = 1 - 1 / r^(γ-1)

Using the above formula, we get:

  • η = 1 - 1 / 16^(0.4) =
