Insertion sort is the best sorting algorithm when applied on an array which is sorted or almost sorted.

Explanation:
Insertion sort is a simple and efficient sorting algorithm that works by inserting elements one-by-one into their correct position in a sorted array. It is an in-place sorting algorithm with a time complexity of O(n^2) in the worst case. However, its average case and best case time complexity are O(n) and O(1), respectively.

When applied on an array that is already sorted or almost sorted, insertion sort performs very well because it does not need to do much work. In such cases, most of the elements are already in their correct position, and the algorithm only needs to make a few swaps to place the misplaced elements in their correct position.

Other sorting algorithms like quicksort, heapsort, and mergesort have a worst-case time complexity of O(nlogn) and do not perform well on almost sorted arrays because they have to do a lot of unnecessary comparisons and swaps. Therefore, insertion sort is the best choice for sorting almost sorted arrays.
