Calculation of Hydraulic Conductivity of Aquifer

Given data:

  • Thickness of water table aquifer: 50m

  • Diameter of well: 20cm

  • Uniform pumping rate: 0.05 m3/sec

  • Steady state drawdown at 10m distance from well: 6.5m

  • Steady state drawdown at 100m distance from well: 0.25m

Formula used:

The hydraulic conductivity (K) of the aquifer can be calculated using the following formula:

K = (Q ln(r2/r1))/(2πhL)

where,

Q = pumping rate (m3/sec)
r1 = radius of well (m)
r2 = radial distance from the well to the observation well (m)
h = thickness of the aquifer (m)
L = distance between the well and the observation well (m)

Calculation:

  • Convert the diameter of the well to radius: r1 = 0.1m

  • Substitute the given values into the formula:

K = (0.05 ln(100/10))/(2π x 50 x 90)

K = 5.59 x 10-4 m/sec

Answer:

The hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer is 5.59 x 10-4 m/sec.
