Reasons for Stagnation and Deterioration of Agriculture Sector during British Rule in India

There are various reasons why the agriculture sector continued to experience stagnation and deterioration during the British rule in India. Some of these reasons are:

Land Tenure System
The British introduced a new land tenure system which was unfavorable for the Indian farmers. The system was designed in such a way that the farmers had to pay high rents to the British landlords. Moreover, the British landlords also had the power to evict the farmers from their land. As a result, farmers were unable to invest in improving their agricultural practices, and this led to the stagnation of agriculture.

Drain of India’s Wealth
The British also drained India's wealth through their policies. They imposed heavy taxes on Indian farmers, which left them with little money to invest in their crops. Additionally, the British imported cheap agricultural products from other countries, which led to a decline in demand for Indian agricultural products. This ultimately caused a deterioration of the agriculture sector.

Decline of Handicraft
The British implemented policies that led to the decline of the handicraft industry in India. The handicraft industry was an essential source of income for many farmers. With the decline of the handicraft industry, farmers lost their source of income, and this further worsened the situation.
