Since the sentence is a question, the main indirect verb becomes 'asked' or 'enquired'. Also, conjunction if/whether is used after it.
The simple past tense verb 'were' becomes past perfect tense 'had been' in indirect speech.
The phrase 'or something' is used to add colloquial emphasis to the question and so does not need to be added to indirect speech.
Indirect sentence: 'The Inspector asked Nalin if he had been living under a rock.'
