Problem: A milkman mixes 25 litres of water with 75 litres of milk. He sells 1/5th of the mixture and then adds water to replenish the quantity which he has sold. What is the resultant proportion of milk to water?

Solution:

Step 1: Initial Mixture
- Water = 25 litres
- Milk = 75 litres
- Total mixture = 25 + 75 = 100 litres

Step 2: Selling 1/5th of the Mixture
- 1/5th of 100 litres = 20 litres
- Therefore, the milkman sells 20 litres of the mixture.

Step 3: Replenishing with Water
- After selling 20 litres, the milkman adds water to replenish the quantity.
- Let's assume he adds x litres of water.
- Now, the total quantity of the mixture = 100 - 20 + x = 80 + x litres

Step 4: Final Proportion of Milk to Water
- The final quantity of milk = 75 litres (as no milk was added)
- The final quantity of water = 25 + x litres
- Therefore, the proportion of milk to water = 75 : (25 + x)

Step 5: Finding the Value of x
- We know that the milkman added x litres of water to the mixture.
- We also know that the final quantity of the mixture = 80 + x litres.
- Therefore, x litres of water is 1/4th of the final mixture.
- Hence, x = 1/4 * (80 + x)

Step 6: Solving for x
- x = 1/4 * (80 + x)
- 4x = 80 + x
- 3x = 80
- x = 80/3

Step 7: Final Proportion of Milk to Water
- The final quantity of milk = 75 litres
- The final quantity of water = 25 + (80/3) litres
- Therefore, the proportion of milk to water = 75 : (25 + (80/3))
- Simplifying, we get the proportion of milk to water as 15 : 7

Answer: The resultant proportion of milk to water is 15 : 7.

A milkman mixes 25 litres of water with 75 litres of milk. He sells 1/...
Ans. 3:2
explanation: when he first added water then the mixture becomes 100litres from which he sold 20litres,now 80litres of mixture left which contains 60litres of milk and 20litres of water.
Again,he added 20litres of water to get the initial quantity of mixture back.
So,now the mixture contains 60litres of milk and 40litres of water.
