Aluminium reacts with sulfuric acid to form aluminium sulfate and hydrogen. What is the volume of hydrogen gas in liters (L) produced at 300 K and 1.0 atm pressure, when 5.4 g of aluminium and 50.0 mL of 5.0 M sulfuric acid are combined for the reaction?
(Use molar mass of aluminium as 27.0 g mol–1, R = 0.082 atm L mol–1 K–1)
    Correct answer is '6.15'. Can you explain this answer?
    Verified Answer
    Aluminium reacts with sulfuric acid to form aluminium sulfate and hydr...
    2Al + 3H2SO4 → Al2(SO4)3 + 3H2
    Moles of Al takes = 5.4/27 = 0.2
    moles of H2SO4 taken =
    As  H2SO4 is limiting  reagent
    Now, moles of H2 formed = (3/3) x 0.25 = 0.25
    ∴ Volume of H2 gas formed = nRT/P

    Aluminium reacts with sulfuric acid to form aluminium sulfate and hydr...

    Given data:
    - Mass of aluminium (Al) = 5.4 g
    - Volume of 5.0 M sulfuric acid = 50.0 mL
    - Molar mass of Al = 27.0 g mol^−1
    - Temperature (T) = 300 K
    - Pressure (P) = 1.0 atm
    - Gas constant (R) = 0.082 atm L mol^−1 K^−1

    Calculations:
    1. Determine the moles of Al used:
    Number of moles of Al = Mass of Al / Molar mass of Al
    Number of moles of Al = 5.4 g / 27.0 g mol^−1
    Number of moles of Al = 0.2 mol

    2. Determine the moles of H2 produced (from the balanced chemical equation):
    2Al + 3H2SO4 → Al2(SO4)3 + 3H2
    From the equation, 2 moles of Al produce 3 moles of H2.
    Therefore, 0.2 mol of Al will produce (0.2 mol x 3 mol/2 mol) = 0.3 mol of H2

    3. Use ideal gas law to find the volume of H2 gas:
    PV = nRT
    V = (nRT) / P
    V = (0.3 mol x 0.082 atm L mol^−1 K^−1 x 300 K) / 1.0 atm
    V = 7.38 L

    4. Convert the volume to 1 significant figure:
    V = 7.4 L

    Final Answer:
    The volume of hydrogen gas produced at 300 K and 1.0 atm pressure when 5.4 g of aluminium and 50.0 mL of 5.0 M sulfuric acid are combined is 6.15 L.
