Mahesh is travelling at a distance of 1200 km in Japan by Bullet train. Due to some technical fault in the engine of the train, speed of the train was reduced by 100 km/hr thus overall time of his journey increased by 24 minutes. What was the normal speed of the bullet train?
  • a)
    400 km/hr
  • b)
    500 km/hr
  • c)
    600 km/hr
  • d)
    450 km/hr
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Mahesh is travelling at a distance of 1200 km in Japan by Bullet trai...
Let the normal speed of the bullet train is N km/hr and the corresponding time taken is A hours.
Hence; 1200/N = A .. (1)
According to the 2nd condition; 1200/(N - 100) = A + 2/5 .. (2)
Equation (2) - Equation (1); 1200/(N - 100) - 1200/N = 2/5
If we will try to solve this equation then it will become too lengthy. Hence such questions we should solve by using the options.
Out of the given options, option (c) satisfies above equation.
Hence; N = 600 km/hr

Mahesh is travelling at a distance of 1200 km in Japan by Bullet trai...
Understanding the Problem
Mahesh travels 1200 km by bullet train, but the train's speed decreases by 100 km/hr due to a fault, increasing his journey time by 24 minutes. We need to find the normal speed of the bullet train.
Key Information
- Distance = 1200 km
- Speed reduction = 100 km/hr
- Increase in time = 24 minutes = 24/60 hours = 0.4 hours
Formulating the Equation
1. Let the normal speed of the train be 'x' km/hr.
2. The time taken at normal speed is Distance/Speed = 1200/x hours.
3. The speed after reduction is (x - 100) km/hr.
4. The time taken after speed reduction is 1200/(x - 100) hours.
Setting Up the Equation
The increase in time due to the speed reduction can be expressed as:
1200/(x - 100) - 1200/x = 0.4
Solving the Equation
1. Multiply through by x(x - 100) to eliminate the denominators:
1200x - 1200(x - 100) = 0.4x(x - 100)
2. Simplifying gives:
1200x - 1200x + 120000 = 0.4x^2 - 40x
3. Rearranging the equation gives:
0.4x^2 - 40x - 120000 = 0
4. Multiplying through by 10 to remove the decimal:
4x^2 - 400x - 1200000 = 0
5. Using the quadratic formula, we find:
x = 600 km/hr (the normal speed of the bullet train).
Conclusion
Hence, the normal speed of the bullet train is 600 km/hr, confirming that option 'C' is correct.
