Direction: Read the following paragraph and choose the correct options to answer any four questions given below :
A large bus and a van, both moving with a velocity of magnitude v, have a head-on-collision and both the vehicles stop after the collision. The time of the collision is 1 sec.
Q. Which vehicle according to you will suffer the less damage?
  • a)
    Van
  • b)
Bus and Van both will have similar impact
  • c)
    Bus
  • d)
There will not be any effect on any of the vehicle
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Direction: Read the following paragraph and choose the correct option...
(a) Since the action and reaction are equal and opposite during a collision, both the vehicles experience an equal force.
(b) We are given,
Initial velocity of both the bus and the van = v
Final velocity of both the bus and the van = 0
If m₁ and m₂ are the masses of the large bus and the van respectively, where m₁ is much greater than m₂
Change in momentum of the bus = m₁ x (0 — v) = —m₁v
Change in momentum of the van = m₂ x (0 — v) = —m₂v
Since m₁ < m₂,="" the="" van="" will="" experience="" smaller="" momentum="" />
(c) The force acting on a body is equal to the product of its mass and the acceleration, i.e.,
F= mass x acceleration = m x a
a = F ÷ m
a α 1 ÷ m
Acceleration experienced by the bus α 1 ÷ m₁
Acceleration experienced by the van , α 1 ÷ m₂
Since m₂ < m₁,="" therefore="" the="" van="" experiences="" greater="" />
(d) Due to the transfer of small momentum from the van to the bus, the bus suffers less damage than the van.

Direction: Read the following paragraph and choose the correct option...
Explanation:

Collision Scenario:
- A large bus and a van are moving towards each other with the same velocity, v.
- They collide head-on and both vehicles come to a stop after the collision.
- The time of the collision is 1 second.

Damage Suffered:
- The damage suffered by a vehicle in a collision depends on the change in momentum.
- Momentum is the product of mass and velocity.
- Both the bus and the van have the same velocity before the collision.
- However, the bus has a larger mass compared to the van.

Effect of Collision:
- In a collision, the total momentum before the collision is equal to the total momentum after the collision (according to the law of conservation of momentum).
- Since both vehicles come to a stop after the collision, their final momentum is zero.
- Therefore, the total momentum before the collision is also zero.

Effect on Van:
- The van has a smaller mass compared to the bus.
- In order for the total momentum to be zero, the van must have a larger change in momentum compared to the bus.
- The change in momentum is given by the formula: change in momentum = mass x change in velocity.
- Since both vehicles stop after the collision, the change in velocity for the van is larger compared to the bus.
- Therefore, the van suffers a larger change in momentum and hence, more damage.

Conclusion:
- Based on the above analysis, it can be concluded that the van will suffer more damage compared to the bus in the head-on collision.
