Gaseous Fuels: CNG and LPG

Gaseous fuels are those fuels that exist in a gaseous state at normal temperature and pressure. They are commonly used as an energy source for various purposes, including cooking, heating, and transportation. CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) are two examples of gaseous fuels.

1. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG):
- CNG is primarily composed of methane gas (CH4) and is obtained from natural gas reservoirs.
- It is extracted from underground wells and then compressed to a pressure of around 200-250 bar to form CNG.
- CNG is stored in high-pressure cylinders and used as a fuel for vehicles, particularly in transportation systems such as buses, taxis, and cars.
- It is considered a cleaner alternative to gasoline or diesel as it produces lower emissions of pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter.
- Due to its gaseous nature, CNG requires specialized storage and dispensing infrastructure.

2. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG):
- LPG is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases, mainly propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10).
- It is obtained as a byproduct during the refining of crude oil or natural gas processing.
- LPG is stored and transported in liquid form under moderate pressure but can easily convert into a gaseous state upon release.
- It is widely used for cooking, heating, and as a fuel for vehicles, particularly in areas where natural gas pipelines are not available.
- LPG burns efficiently and produces lower emissions compared to traditional solid fuels such as coal or wood.
- It is also considered a clean-burning fuel as it emits fewer harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases.
