A square steel slab of area 1 m2 is provided for a column made of two channel sections. The 300 mm × 300 mm column carries an axial compression load of 2000 kN. The line of action of load passes through the centroid of the column section as well as the slab base. The permissible bending stress in slab base is 185 mPa. The required minimum thickness of slab base is :
  • a)
    1100 mm
  • b)
    89 mm
  • c)
    63 mm

Calculation of required minimum thickness of slab base for a column

Given data:
Area of steel slab, A = 1 m²
Axial compression load, P = 2000 kN
Permissible bending stress in slab base, σb = 185 MPa

Formula used:
σb = (P/A) × y
where, y is the distance of the neutral axis of the column section from the slab base.

Calculation:
The channel section of the column has a width of 300 mm, so the distance of the neutral axis from the slab base is:
y = 150 mm

Substituting the values in the formula, we get:
185 × 10⁶ = (2000 × 10³) / 1 × 10⁶ × 150

Solving for thickness of slab base, we get:
Thickness of slab base = 55 mm

Therefore, the required minimum thickness of slab base for the column is 55 mm.
